Dairy Queen is an international icon known for its frozen treats, but did you know it started right here in Kankakee?

Local ice cream shop owner "Sherb" Noble first unveiled soft serve ice cream on Aug. 4, 1938, after teaming up with J.F. McCullough, who built the machine that produced the revolutionary product.

After the initial launch, Sherb continued to perfect the recipe and the resulting "Noble" mix contains real butterfat and natural vanilla. His focus on quality ingredients and quality service is a tradition proudly carried on today by the Noble family. The family operates seven stores -- two in Kankakee, two in Aurora, and one each in Geneva, Bourbonnais and Momence.

Today, Dairy Queen continues to be popular with the young and old alike, who stop by or drive thru for products ranging from an Arctic Rush to the decadent ice cream cakes.
